I've loved this movie ever since I first saw it, with my brother, as a teenager at the Grand Lake Theatre in Oakland, CA. It's an easy journey, with magic in every story, and I can't imagine anyone other than Paul Newman as the Judge. I try to take some time for this movie whenever it's on, like visiting an old, dear friend.

the movie is like a great baseball hitter that knows they did not hit it right. the lead actor is one of the greatest of all time.he could not do any more than what he did.the supporting cast is solid.the story was not quite enough.i do not question the ability of the director. i simply say i wish the story was worked on more before filming. i still like watching it. i just wanted it to be great. maybe i will like it more as time goes by.

Sentimental and clever look at how the old west may have been with Paul Newman as the judge of all around his place. Directed by John Huston who gives this self-appointed judge as much freedom as he wants to do battle with the crooks "Roy Bean" has a bit of charm when Newman's love Lilly Langtree comes to town. An oddball western that works out okay.

What a strange and magical movie this is! I was entranced by it. I could not look away from the screen. It was for me totally captivating. Paul Newman's performance in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof was superior, but his performance in this rivals that one IMO. He totally disappeared into the character. The movie drew me in. I laughed, I cried. I rooted for the good guys who were really the bad guys, but I guess that was the point: to challenge our conceptions of hero and villain, to make you think about right and wrong, to consider how the world was back then and how it shaped people and forced them to make certain choices. At least I can say that is what I did as a result of watching the film. It was a raw look at life in the unsettled West with quite a few funny twists along the way. I have to say the scene with Old Bob was hilarious. It really was funny, just plain funny - no gimmicks, no props, just plain refreshingly funny. Everybody was good in it, but Paul Newman was fantastic. He really blew me away.

An entertaining Western dramadey about the real-life judge obsessed with Lily Langtry. Newman is great as the title character, a misunderstood anti-hero, Principal was nominated for a Golden Globe while Perkins, Keach and Gardner have brief parts as people who were briefly associated with Bean. Director Huston (who makes a cameo as "Grizzly Adams") and screenwriter Milius throw actual history out the window to opt for a funny, romantic and cynical film with a far-fetched finale. A good, but not great film that's good for a chuckle or two. I give it a 3.5/5.

Creative take on notorious Judge Roy Bean. Paul Newman does an excellent job. Lots of humor. Very sentimental. Great supporting cast with notable character actors and some good cameos from Tony Perkins, director John Huston, Ava Gardner, who plays a small but pivotal role as Lily Langtry, and others. Pleasant score from Maurice Jarre ("Lawrence of Arabia," "Dr. Zhivago"). You will end up loving this movie.
