The best film of 1994. More insightful and dramatic than typical Hollywood movies. A tribute to strong African-American mom's who keep families together, an indictment of exploitative coaches and schools, and ultimately a triumph of the spirit when we see the one cast aside find his way to succeed.

  • The NBA Dream that Doesn't Come True

This film is a raw portrayal of the sad state of pinning all of one's hopes on the NBA dream. We are taken into the lives of aspiring basketball players whose hope for escaping the street and the ghetto is shooting hoops. Predictably, we see how good doesn't always translate to great. The coaches, the family, the players, the fans are all a part of the dream. But when the dream doesn't come true, whether from injury or failure, the player must live with What Might Have Been. It is all about that one moment in time when an athlete can either grasp the opportunity or lose it. Real insight into the meanness of a highly competitive playing field that chews up youngsters and spits them out.

Hoop Dreams is a great documentary! It is real, raw, exciting, emotional, and powerful! The movie made me laugh, cry, cheer, and applaud for Arthur Agee and William Gates. I admire the dedication of the film makers and of the families who appeared in the film. Fans of documentaries should like this film!

This was an outstanding film. I watched it with my husband who is from Chicago. The neighborhood, schools & love portrayed was truly heart felt. I valued the details relayed in story. The cast, supporting, cast & extra were phenomenal! We found ourselves caught up in the lives of the two athletes hoping for the best & celebrating joyfully with their victories. I'm was truly surprised TCM had this on the schedule & I commend you for airing it, OUTSTANDING! Please air other worthwhile documentaries on other African-Americans achieving against the odds. Thank you! Amen.

Yes, not a movie. Miss that. But an alternate for viewing with a thought to what it may take to make it. Remember, a few of the movies you'll see you'll wonder how that got here
