I remember when this movie came out in '78. The reviews were mostly not good and finally seeing it, I can see why it was a flop. It's too bad because the cast and crew seemed to be trying to update the traditional western with lots of underplayed acting with moody, dark cinematography. One critic aptly summed up the movie as 'low-keyed to the point of catatonia.' The plot, dialogue, and characterizations are too sketchy and get dwarfed by the great visuals that suffer on a smaller TV screen. Jane Fonda plays another of her tough but vulnerable heroines. Tt's hard to get used to seeing James Caan as a rancher but he does well matching her in their scenes. Why Richard Farsnworth was nominated for an Oscar escapes me; he was good but his part was not built up enough to be truly memorable. Ditto for Jason Robards' performance. Call this a minimalist western and be drink enough so you don't get bored enough to turn it off.

  • A quiet, beautiful movie

Whether you like her politics or not, you might enjoy her quiet, unsentimental part in this beautifully filmed movie. Every time I see it, I am always moved by her performance. To see other roles she was in and put her own personal stamp on, see "Barefoot in the Park", "They Shoot Horses Don't They?", "Klute" and one of my favorites, a young Jane in "A Period of Adjustment."And lest we forget, she started a health and fitness movement with a focus on women that is still and inspiration.
