The working title of this film was The Gangster. The film begins with voice-over narration describing the 1920s as the start of an era of gangsters and stating, "What you are about to see is true. The names have been changed but the facts have not." Voice-over narration continues intermittently throughout.
Although October 1959 Hollywood Reporter news items add Cindy Ames, Mina Vaughn, Jack Kenney, Tyler McVey and Bobby Mittelstaedt to the cast, their appearance in the final film has not been confirmed. The Hollywood Reporter review calls The Music Box Kid "a fictional recreation of the events that led to Thomas A. Dewey's political beginnings"; however, the occurrences in the film bear only slight resemblance to Dewey's actual career.
