The first female president has to deal with her husband's bruised ego.

When Leslie McCloud becomes president of the United States, her husband, Thad, reluctantly gives up his successful electronics research business and finds himself at loose ends as America's "first lady." Leslie's duties allow little time for her husband and children. Their son begins developing delinquent traits and their teenaged daughter also becomes troublesome. The rowdy behavior of a visiting Latin American dictator seeking foreign aid, whom Leslie has asked Thad to escort around Washington, makes headlines and provides ammunition for Leslie's political foes, especially Senator Walsh. Doris Reid, an old girl friend of Thad's, observes the growing distance between him and Leslie and flirts with him, but he manages to elude her. When Senator Walsh questions Thad before a Senate subcommittee in an effort to defame Leslie, Thad turns the tables on him and exposes him for what he really is behind his political pretensions. Leslie is overworked, and Thad feels underprivileged, but their problems are solved when Leslie discovers she is pregnant and resigns the presidency.
