Henry Hathaway was one of the masters!
sex..sex..computerized special effects...poor stories and so-called stars that are paid way to much. That's about the size of major hollywood releases today and it's a shame. The Sons of Katie Elder was a great film from start to finish. No, it didn't win any major awards for 1965. What the film did win is an appreication for all in front and behind the camera. those people in post production and promotion of films. I learned from this film also that someone actually had to write music scores. The stunts were peformed by the very best at the time. The Sons of Katie Elder is a film that I've always looked back heart felt fondness. I was eleven when the film came out and it was something to see John Wayne and everyone on that big wide screen at The State Theatre in Kingsport, Tn. A kid's admission was 35 cents.
A comeback for the duke
Anyone who had 4 sons like the ones Katie Elder had, wouldn't have it so good. But when the chips are down, they come through. Especially when it comes to avenging their Father's murder and theft of their ranch by a local businessman. This film was something of a comeback for John Wayne after having cancer surgery in 1964. He looked and felt like a physical wreck, but still carried the film along with support from Dean Martin and George Kennedy.
An example of Americana by an American icon.
Great John Wayne Western
One of my favorites growing up-- It's a wonderful story that surrounds itself around a woman that the viewer never even see's in the film. What an interesting concept... .
