The United States government is losing shipments of gold to a gang that robs the stagecoaches carrying the gold from the mint to the banks. The bandits are hard to catch because they never spend the gold but melt it down and sell it across the border. As one area seems to be the center of the activity, secret service agent Red Barton is sent to investigate. He suspects businessman Jim Hess of being the ringleader and applies for a job with him. Hess is suspicious, but Red proves that he is the Lone Bandit, the man who has been stealing the gold from Hess's men. Red is just about to close a deal with Hess when Barbara Morgan and her aunt Sarah arrive at Hess's hideout. They have come to live on the ranch, which was left to them by their relative Ed Morgan. Their presence interferes with everyone's plans. Red offers to stay on as foreman and his sidekick, Peewee, offers to be cook and handyman. When Red tries to scare Barbara and Sarah away from the ranch so he can search for Hess's gold, Barbara begins to suspect him. Hess encourages her suspicions, convincing her to turn Red over to the sheriff at a dance in town. Red cannot convince the sheriff that he is a government man, and it appears that Hess will escape with the gold until Peewee pulls a gun on the sheriff, forcing him to form a posse. Meanwhile, Hess has taken Barbara and Sarah captive. When the sheriff and his men arrive, they shoot it out with Hess's gang. Hess escapes, after lighting the dynamite he planted to destroy evidence of the hideout. Red helps Barbara and Sarah escape just before the dynamite explodes, burying Hess. Red and Barbara and Sarah and Peewee are now free to resume their romances.
