"The Beginning or the End" was a decent view. I share the sentiments of others in that the time capsule was kind of goofy and the special effects (BY TODAY'S STANDARDS, one must remember) were a bit lacking. However, the main concept that remains in my mind from having watched this is to JUST IMAGE what *CAN BE humanly possible* when the government (ours/any and especially ALL CO-ORDINATED) could achieve if they SET THEIR WILL towards making it happen (blank check and sheer determination). Whether the cause is noble or ill-advised remains to be answered by history.
A sobering reminder
- David H.
Despite some time capsule hokum and weak special effects (by today's standards) this film becomes a gripping account of the beginning of the Atomic Age and its implications for mankind. The movie features a long list of recognizable character actors from Hollywood's Golden era, but mainly centers on Tom Drake as a nuclear scientist with reservations about building an atomic bomb. While not a great film it is still a sobering reminder of what we have had to deal with all these years.
Haunting History and Hollywood Graffitti
- Justin Daly
As the beginning of the film explains the film was put in a time capsule to explain to the future generations the reason for the atom bomb and the hope nuclear energy will improve mankind. The general history is impressive the fear of evil Hitler met by humane concern of Einstein. FDR and Churchill accepting the challenge to save democracy. Fermi, Openhimer, and Groves the major directors of the project support by their staff and the actual soldiers that carry out the mission. The conclusion is left in the hands of minor players still under a vale of secrecy located in common location of the Washington D.C. airport saying I hope our sacrifices were worth it. But as a film and popular culture maven I am impressed by the ironies Robert Walker the easy going G.I. the project engineer,Barry Nelson as Colonel Tibbets a future James Bond, Audrey Totter the general's secretary future unstable character, and Guy Williams the future Zorro is the bombardier who drops the bomb.
I thoroughly enjoyed this move in spite of any errors. I have searched every online site to find a copy on DVD or video to purchase and cannot find one. I would love to have it on DVD! Is one available anywhere?? My husband is retired USAF pilot and would like very much to see this. He missed it on TCM. Any help is greatly email@example.com
How Hollywood once supported America
- Danny Lee
Anyone with knowledge of the Manhattan Project would see the many discrepancies and historical/political inaccuracies in the film but considering it was made only a year or so after the end of World War Two and with the security concerns, it holds up very well. The many scientist who are opposed to making the bomb and/or using it after completion is correct shown but thank heaven the bomb was dropped. My late Father always said the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki saved his life. After three years infantry fighting in Europe, he was scheduled to transfer to the Pacific for the planned invasion of Japan. Had he died, I would not be here to wrote this review.Seeing 'The Beginning or the End' today make one realize it is a period piece with acting and romantic sub-plots set in the time frame of World War Two film making when the motion picture industry wholeheartedly supported the United States of America. Nowadays, Hollywood is very anti-American as it yearly churns out films that knock the American Way of Life and our military men and women. When a film like 'Lone Survivor' comes along that supports our troops, many in the media cast it as right-wing pro-war propaganda. Funny, films like Robert Redford's 'Lions for Lambs' and 'The Company You Keep' and Matt Damon's 'Green Zone' bomb at the box office while 'Lone Survivor' is a money making hit.It makes on wonder when Hollywood will discovery the fool's errand it is on--

This movie is a well executed history of the making of the atomic bomb. I would like to have it on DVD so as to educate my entire family about one of the most critical times in our nation's history.

A chain reaction
- Steve Cooper
Got up at 5 a.m. January 2 to watch this movie. The last time I saw it I was about 8 years old. Why isn't it on DVD? Early in the movie, there's a scene depicting the first chain reaction under a stadium in Chicago. All these years later, the scene was exactly as I remembered it from I last saw "Beginning or . . . " Still riveting! This film should not be discarded or ignored. So thanks, TCM, for showing it. I hope younger people get a chance to see it so they, too, can understand the monumental effort that was the Manhattan Project and so they can also understand that all of us still live under a cloud of danger. Please, TCM, replay the film during a primetime hour!
Ya gotta show this movie again
- Jim VanEpps
I saw most of this the other morning on TCM (missed the beginning). What I did see was fascinating. There's a great cast of character actors from the '40s. The story of the development of the A-bomb held my interest throughout. I hope TCM will consider airing it again in the near future.
the Beginning or the end
- Bob D'Agostino
This is the best and most comprehensive movie made about the building and dropping of the atomic bomb. I enjoyed it thoroughly in my youth and hope against hope that TCM shows it on their network. I would also purchase it if on DVD.
the beginning or the end

This movie was made before atomic energy became a bad word. It is not filled with propaganda as in the later films on this subject. I love Brian Donlevy. He does a great job as Gen Lesle Groves. This movie was a great influence on my life.
Remember this movie from my adolexcence
