  • Underrated & obvious critic prejudice

In reading the notes about the making of this movie, Robert Mitchum's first since being busted for evil marijuana, it's obvious that their minds were made up prior to reviewing. The only thing I found disappointing about the movie was it's abrupt ending. I think a wonderful followup movie or even a series could have come out of the story line after the sordid hidden past came out- to defend the accused. But, my idea of developing further stories could just be because I happen to LOVE New Orleans & the people of New Orleans. The movie posters are fascinating too, depicting Ava's character as the femme fatale, which she indeed was not, & the line implying that prostitution was the only thing that made New Orleans famous-well, my goodness. {I'd LOVE to see a movie poster, from the past OR currently, stating THAT about a movie made about politics & Washington DC ! } Nevertheless, the movie had great potential but in my opinion was cut short & that was more likely the reason it didn't do well at the box office or is not well known today. Leaving audiences frustrated is not exactly a recipe for success.

Certainly entertaining enough , good acting with a somewhat predicatble, mediocre script- such a cast deserved better- they did their best with what they had.Leonard Maltin seems to be rather grouchy...not to mention sarcastic beyond value

Ava Gardner is delicious as a wealthy heiress in New Orleans with a secret. Robert Mitchum plays a former beau, now a married doctor, but still not immune to Ava's charms. Paul Beaurevelle, played brilliantly by Melvyn Douglas, is a ruthless and vain gambler bent on retaining his comfortable lifestyle, no matter who it hurts. Or whoever gets killed in the process. Great acting by Gardner and Douglas. Mitchum isn't given that much to do, but does it well. Good movie.
