Deep In Vanity's Lounge
Eenie meenie miney moe, my mother told me to pick you because a beautiful, wealthy, independent woman can do that- no matter what the cost of the payment that's due! Oh, brother!
A Must View . . .
- Robert Mann
great movie, the best of the lot by far in the lineup for the evening, too bad it' on so late PST! It's hard to believe that the movies on the lineup earlier received oscars, but then again an oscar isn't what it used to be. rm

Does it nose out "Tess" in the Thomas Hardy adaptation sweepstakes? Probably not. But it sure as hell is more entertaining. And Julie has it all over Nastasia in the acting dept.
Three Wonderful Male Actors
If not for Terence Stamp's truly reprehensible character, would have rooted for him.Alan Bates once again as the terrific guy that could've gotten away.Remade recently,a very worthy remake with Mattias Schoenerts in the Alan Bates role,Jim Sturridge as the slimy hubby, terrific Michael Sheen improving Peter Finch's role (never likedhim due to his affair with Vivien Leigh, takes 2 to tango, but she was mentally ill).
Far From the Madding Crowd

Exceptional! Please program this film far more often!
I honestly believe this is Julie Christie's finest performance, as she is centrally cast and doesn't compete with another woman, as in "Dr. Zhivago," or a male actor, for that matter. She carries the film from beginning to end and that is no mean feat for an actress! Bathsheba wasn't the first woman to make a bad decision and marry a cur when she was young, only to find it was the steadfast and true man she should have married and, alas, she won't be the last. Terence Stamp's performance as her louse of a husband gives a truly splendid performance, as does the always superb Peter Finch as the neighbor who loves her so only to regret it. Of course, the film belongs to Julie Christie and to the great Alan Bates, the shepherd who in more ways than one cares for all Bathsheba is and ever will be. Hardy's grand novel comes to life here and this film is a visual feast, as the cinematography is so beautiful, and a feast for the ears as well, as Richard Bennett's Academy Award winning score is so good it is worth buying the music for! What a film!
Superb use of English Folk Music
While the entire movie is spectacular, the use of authentic music particularly stands out. Performed simply as part of everyday life and woven throughout the soundtrack, traditional British folks songs are the icing on this beautiful cake. I first saw this on the big screen as a teenager and fell in love with everything about it. All these years later, I feel he same.

Thomas Hardy's greatest novel faithfully brought to the screen. A must-see for connoisseurs of 19th century literature.
One of the top 5 Romantic Movies ever made.

Please release this movie to DVD!It is a beautiful movie that has been forgotten. And; shouldn't be!Masterfully made in every way from the cinematography to the casting! Please vote to have this magnificent movie released to DVD so a new generation can view one of the true masterpieces'and the generation (mine)that was lucky enough to have seen it on the big screen could once again enjoy a wonderful romantic movie.
This film should be DVD
This film is breathtaking--absolutely beautiful. I have the VHS version and hope it will be distributed on DVD. The scenery, music, costumes, and acting are first rate.
This is an Amazing Movie
This is one of my top 100 films. Anne, granted some of the classics like this from Thomas Hardy may not be the dish for a younger generation, plots being less than subtle. These days, the men would have kicked Bathsheba to the curb as a brat, but for me has it all - great actors, beautiful lush cinematography, and a heart wrenching story with not a classic love triangle, but a veritable romantic polyhedron. Sorry you could see it for the gem it is.
I watched this movie last night
and the scenery was beautiful I will give it that much but man what a stupid story with such talented actorsway too long for a movie that seems to have no point other than the fact that 3 men were hot for a childish woman
