Originally released at 181 minutes; Warner Bros. removed 27 minutes after the premiere, including the musical number "Here what's I'm here for" performed by Judy Garland and a sequence where James Mason asks Garland to marry him.
In 1983 the film was restored to its original length by Ron Haver. However, although all of the original soundtrack was available, some visual footage couldn't be found: the restored version resorts to a montage of stills, dialogue and music in place of the missing scenes. Director George Cukor died the day before the opening of the restored version.
Later released in an alternate, 154-minute version. This footage was restored to 176 minutes in 1983 by Ron Haver. The original film ran 181 minutes, but several minutes are gone forever. They have been replaced with stills accompanied by the original soundtrack recording.
