What a gem...what a movie!
- el debbo
The poignant soundtrack, the brilliant photography by Oswald Morris and direction of the great genius, Carol Reed.So many stellar players, not just the 3 leads, but everyone else who had a line or two. Honestly. What struck me above and beyond all that, was the accurate portrayal of a harbor town several years into WWII. Buildings half-crumbling, hotel rooms with 6 bunks per, everyone looking like a shambles. The people out of uniform in their tattered clothing and their 'I-give-up-what-difference' ennui. So different from the hooray-for-Britain and let's-all-pull-together films (that I also love). This one's full of realism...people who are totally alone in the world, on their very last nerve, suffering from tremendous loss and trauma. Sounds grim, but it's a beautiful, beautiful movie.
I was one of the ones who missed the previous viewing. Thank you so much, TCM, for showing it again. What a good story, as well as well-acted. It was well worth the wait for me. You showed it also on Sophia Loren's 81st. Birthday. Wow! She is 11 years older than I am. At our age, that makes us peers.Anyway, I appreciate you folks at TCM for so many reasons. I love the wonderful old classics and with Robert and Ben, along with Sally on Saturday nights, TCM is the only station I watch. Thank you.
It seems to be a trend....missed the film
Though I had a TCM reminder, I only saw the last few minutes of the film. I wanted to see this film as I didn't realize that William Holden, Sophia Loren, and Trevor Howard, had made a film together. Please add this film again to your line-up...and add during your prime time so I make sure I don't miss!!!
MIssed it as well
I have been trying to see this film for many years. I just caught the ending this morning and was hoping I could see it on TCM Watch, but it is not available. Please, please run it again and perhaps send me an email informing me of when it will play.
Oh darn! I thought this film was something else. Just caught the ending. Oh , would you please show this one again? Soon? Thank you TCM. Surely it has enough big stars in it for you to show it again, soon. A very hopeful, Thank you!
Begged For The Happy Ending
I saw the movie where he missed the train.....very unsatisfying, but making the train would have been a cliche. Tough choice. Great performance by William Holden and Sophia looked gorgeous and did a very good job with her character.

i'VE SEEN BOTH ENDINGS AND THEY BOTH HAVE MERITS, A DVD WITH BOTH WOULD BE A HIT.
Summary ending incorrect; Wishful Thinking?
The version shown this week did not have this "happy" ending. Alert: Do not read if you do not want to know, but he misses the train and tells Kane he will find her in London, to which Kane says "Sure."The two men walk off together.
William Holden is at his finest in this lesser known picture!!
A SLEEPER THAT DESERVES MORE ATTENTION
Great performances from the top four stars. Good story. Outstanding action sequences.
