A sentimental drama from director Vidor. Beery won the Oscar as Best Actor (Tying with Fredric March for "Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde") & Cooper is just as excellent as his son. Marion was honoured for her screenplay, overly-sentimental, but still powerful. An amazing drama. I give it a 4.5/5.

    Overly sentimental stuff, but watchable.

A very sentimental tearjerker, very well acted by Wallace Beery, and he won an Oscar for this performance. It is far and above better than the 1979 remake. Good story, typically fine MGM production. A real classic.

Dear Madam/Sirs,It was a powerful movie about the strong love of a boy for his dad. I was touched personally as a single father. Lately, I've been getting back into watching these old movie of my childhood, that I used to watch with my Grandmother late @ nite. Those are some special memories for me.RegardsLeo Aficanus

Maudlin at times, and the acting of some of the players dates badly, but a thoroughly satisfying and wonderful film in total. A clasic of the genre, it deservedly made Cooper (who turns in an astonishing performnce) a superstar.
