An OscarĀ® For Goldie

This is an Abe Burrows adaptation of a French farce, opened on Broadway in 1965 with Lauren Bacall in the role of Stephanie. Bogart died in 1957, so maybe she just wasn't up to the film, but Bergman is badly miscast as a dental secretary in Manhattan who lives with her sister and brother-in law and two nephews. Ingrid Bergman? Really? Walter Matthau plays the role he did so frequently he almost perfected it: the over-confident, wise-cracking, somewhat dumb but ultimately lovable middle aged (and eventually old) guy. The plot is formulaic and utterly predictable. Scribe and Sardou would be proud, but the movie is well worth watching for Goldie Hawn's OscarĀ® winning performance. Beautifully costumed and wonderfully lighted, she conveys the character, often without words, radiantly.
