This movie is another great black and white classic of its era that has stood the test of time. The storyline is simple yet engaging, the characters are interesting and believable, the scenery is superb. This is a beautifully filmed story that surpasses itself in quality and class on all levels. It is completely mesmerising and tends to make the viewer become so absorbed in the characters and story that you almost believe you are there. All actors were simply brilliant, of course Anne Shirley is as always simply a breath of breath air with her classic and serene beauty that radiates out of her, but it is little Joan Carroll's performance that steals the show. This little poppet had an extraordinary talent that was rarely matched in her time, and it is on display here in all its finest. When a little girl can make an adult cry during a film you just know that she has something very special. This beautiful film is well worth watching, if not for the underlying message that good will always triumph over evil, then just for the happy feel good feeling it leaves the viewer when it is over. I do so hope that this movie is released on dvd as it is a must see, and classic movie lovers are being denied a chance to see one of the finest movies ever made.
