Cannot abide the Lane Sisters. Kinda like a 30s version of "Happy Talk" TV news anchors. Truly nauseating.
Film definitely picked up steam once my honey, the great Claude Rains arrived on the scene.Never saw him looking so FINE!Thought he and his ex would get back together, but it was not to be.At least he lost out to Donald Crisp, another very fine actor.Didn't think Four Daughters was similar,as Claude was raising the daughters alone vs Fay Bainter in DC.Great stand alone film.
Daughters Courageous (1939)
- James Higgins
Although this is often looked upon as a sequel to Four Daughters, it is not. Four Daughters was an unexpected success for Warner Brothers but they had a problem. It was the film that made John Garfield a household name, and he was killed off in that movie. So Warners, anxious to capitalize of the success of that film and John Garfield, they took the same cast and just made another movie and changing the characters names. It was worth it, because the cast is terrific, especially Garfield. The basic story is Nancy Masters (Fay Bainter) is planning to marry Samuel Sloane (Donald Crisp). Suddenly, the man she married twenty years before and who abandoned her 5 years later, (a terrific Claude Rains) has returned. He had been proclaimed dead by the courts. The story focuses on Nancy and her four daughters, (The Lane sisters: Priscilla, Rosemary and Lola, as well as Gale Page) reaction to the situation. Great support from May Robson, the score is wonderful and the production is top notch. Good story that is sensitively done.
Better than Four Daughters
- Mark Gurley
The reworking of the more-popular Four Daughters plot results in a superior film: in Daughter's Courageous, Claude Rains gets to be John Garfield's "partner in crime" which results in twice the fun. The Lane SIsters and a great ensemble cast with Micheal Curtiz directing --- PUT THIS ONE ON DVD PLEASE; I WILL BUY IT!
PUT MORE OF OLD MOVIES ON DVD!!!
- Jane Carey
It's nice that TCM has its "voting" system to see which movies should be put on DVD, but how can people vote on movies they've not seen?? Not only "Daughter's Courageous" but so many more should be put on DVD immediately! Such as "Farmer's Daughter", "White Banners", "Dulcy", "Anthony Adverse", "Bachelor Mother", Rachel & the Stranger", and many more! It is so frustrating not to be able to have these old movies on DVD when there are so many awful ones already on DVD. I wonder how THEY got on DVD? No one voted for them! I hope that TCM will pressure these movie companies to release many more of these great old movies on DVD!
Claude Rains.... sigh!
Claude Rains is so adorable in this film. What an actor!
Good old movie
- Charles Novo
It has been many years since I saw this movie, but I still remember being affected by the charismatic Garfield and the lovely and sprightly Priscilla Lane. The movie works because it fiollows Hollywood logic, non-practical common sense. Everyone and everything is heightened, escpecially Garfield whose is a heroic loser (would never accept his behavior on a day-to-day basis but can accept it all on screen). Good fun.
I Heart John Garfield!
This movie is great for those that:a) Have sistersb) Like romantic comediesd) Have a crush on John Garfieldc) Had no clue that people in the black and white days stayed out past midnight!Loved every minute of it. Please someone release it on DVD!!!
