This movie tells an important story that affects those of us living in the area to this day. Most people have never seen this film, or even heard of it. If I could get a DVD of this movie, I would buy multiple copies and take one to show at the Annual Yuba River Film Festival in Nevada City, which is at the upstream end of this tale, but whose residents have forgotten their city's role in local history. It was a revelation to me to see this movie on TCM, starring such well known actors, presenting local history in such an entertaining, but accurate way. This area provided much of the gold that got California started, and financed the civil war and industrial development of the west. But the hydraulic mining methods they developed put many times more sediment in the streams than all the earth excavated for the Panama Canal. That sediment, laden with Mercury which was used to recover the gold, is still present in the watershed. One of the first environmental protection rulings in the history of the U.S. (the Sawyer Decision) is the basis of this film, and I wish TCM would make a DVD available so that more people could learn about their heritage and understand more about some of the challenges we face today. To contain and control the sediment, giant dams were constructed, which now block salmon and steelhead migration to and from the upper watershed. Many of us are working today to solve these issues, and this film could be a valuable tool to help our work. (The President's 2014 budget contained $200k for the Army to perform a Recon Study of Fish Passage at Englebright and Daguerre Point Dams, which were built because of the events depicted in this story so long ago. After three tries, the study made it through the budget process this year.) TCM....please help the Yuba River if you can.

For a Hollywood movie, it's surprisingly accurate portrayal of the actual events. Plus it has color! excitement! Drama! romance! Great outdoors photography, stellar cast! A highly recommended movie. To this day you can see the damage in many parts of California caused by hydraulic mining.
