  • MAD DOCTOR & LOVE FROM A STRANGER

"THE MAD DOCTOR" (PARAMOUNT, 1941, TIM WHELAN) WAS ONE OF TURNER'S OFTEN REPEATED RATHBONE FILMS. IT GIVES HIM ONE OF HIS CHARASMATIC ROLES AND, ACCORDING TO THE GREAT HISJTORIAN, WIL-LIAM EVERSON, MY MENTOR IN NUY'S CINEMA PROGRAM, THE FILM HAS ONLY GROWN IN POPULARITY. RATH- BONE'S 'BLUEBEARD PSYCHIATRIST' IS COMPLEX AND ATTRACTIVE. THE SAME POWER IS IN HIS "LOVE FROM A STRANGER" (TRAFALGER, 1937, TIM WHELAN), WHICH IS ONE OF AGATHA CHRISTIE'S BEST MYSTERIES. WHEREAS IN "DOCTOR" RATHBONE IS AFTER PRETTY ELLEN DREW, IN "STRANGER" IT IS REGAL ANN HARDING. ITS CLIMAX IS UNFORETTABLE!THESE ENTRIES WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED, AS WOULD "RHYTHM ON THE RIVER" (PARAMOUNT, 194O, VICTOR SCHERTZINGER) WHERE RATHBONE COMICALLY ENGAGES BING CROSBY AND MARY MARTIN.PLEASE SHOW THESE MOVIES. THEY WOULD BE MUCH ENJOYED AND APPRECIATED!

An okay comedy, good acting with none too subtle hints as to it being a stage play.Absolutely adore Basil Rathbone, even if a line of his was censored. Was it in the script?

What eyes, what lips, what a ham.Love this movie for Basil in his Bread-and Butter days on screen.Good comedy, please show more often. Thanks for all TCM's birthday salutes.

  • I'd marry Wobbles in a minute!

A sweet and silly movie.Rathbone is very charming, very handsome and Leila Hyams very beautiful. Rathbone - a self described ham - was under utilized in comedies.

  • Not great, but enjoyable comedy performances

    • Uncle Basil

Love this early 1930's film, esp an up-and-coming Rathbone,my favorite parts of the movie.

Interesting movie with older sis conniving to aid younger get married first. The most interesting part comes with Rathbone's entry into the mix.He was reasonably attractive thru his career.Lovely bone structure, find him more attractive than pretty boys Flynn and Power, who never did a thing for me.Such penetrating eyes!
