  • A Crooning-Fancy Footworking Musical.

    • Frank Harris Horn
    • 8/9/10

The singing talents of Frank Sinatra and Kathryn Grayson combined with the fancy footwork of Gene Kelly make director, George Sidney's romantic musical a delightful musical extravaganza for the closing year of World War II with Sinatra and Kelly as two sailors, who help a beautiful singer (Grayson) get an audition with bandleader, Jose Iturbi (Himself). Kelly taught Ol' Blue Eyes how to dance in their movie project together. The highlight of the picture is the animation sequence with Kelly dancing with Jerry the Mouse of "Tom and Jerry" fame. Featuring such songs including the movie's title song, "We Hate to Leave", "I Fall in Love Too Easily", "If You Knew Suzie", "Jalousie", "My Heart Sings", "The Worry Song" and "What Makes the Sunset?". The movie's composer, Georgie Stoll won an Oscar for Best Musical Score. Also starring Dean Stockwell, Pamela Britton, John "Rags" Ragland, Billy Gilbert, Henry O'Neill, Grady Sutton, Carlos Ramirez, Edgar Kennedy & Leon Ames.

What a great cast! Better than average 1940's musical, very bubbly and enthusiastic. Excellent use of location filming, unusual for a musical of that time. Well acted by all, a real winner. The score is amazingly good, and this is the movie where Gene Kelly dances with the cartoon mouse.

This movie was really good, I loved it! Frank Sinatra looked really cute, and so did Gene Kelly. The woman was pretty and seemed nice as well. I loved this movie and would love an "Encore".

  • GENE IN A SAILOR SUIT...WOW!!

This movie is my #1 favorite. GENE looks great in his sailor suit of course. His dance routines, as always, are wonderful. I especially love the routine with Jerry Mouse. But I like most of all the way he agrees to help "Clarence" and the two end up becoming inseperable. It's such a fun plot, especially because they both end up with the "right" girl for them. I loved Frank's acting in this movie as well, and it makes me enjoy him in the other two movies in which he and GENE play...TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME and ON THE TOWN; there's still a sense of the "Clarence" character in each movie. It's as though Frank constantly looks up to Gene. The music of Jose' Iturbi is wonderful, and Katheryn Grayson does a good job also. But as always, GENE steals the show and continues to win my heart. Anyone should enjoy this movie, I think it's great!!

Great musical! My favorite Frank Sinatra/Gene Kelly movie made. Kathryn Grayson just makes it even better with her wonderful voice! In my opinion, everyone should see this musical classic!
