Synopsis

As a director of photography, Haskell Wexler has a reputation for brilliance. He has worked with the world's most accomplished directors including Elia Kazan, Mike Nichols, Woody Allen, George Lucas, Milos Forman and Francis Ford Coppola. He has won two Academy Awards in a career that includes numerous classics: "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?," "In the Heat of the Night," "American Graffiti," "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," "Bound for Glory." In 1969, he wrote, produced and directed "Medium Cool," a counterculture classic filmed in the midst of Chicago's 1968 Democratic Convention. Haskell Wexler is also known in Hollywood for a renegade style people either love or hate. Reflecting on his career, Haskell, now 82, says, "I don't think there's a movie that I've been on that I wasn't sure I could direct better." His son Mark's documentary is, of course, no exception. The documentary offers an unusual glimpse into Hollywood family ties, explored in the context of a son's attempts to understand and reconcile with his famous father. In this case, the father is not only a recognized master of cinematography, but a lifelong activist.
