Karns, a stage actor before turning to movies, attended California's Harvard Military academy and USC. He started acting at age 15 with Marjorie Rambeau's stock company and by 1922 was playing lead roles and acting in several Christie comedies that same year. In the early days of sound films, Karns went back to the stage and later returned to films playing newspaper reporters, agents and like characters. He played in "Rocky King, Detective," one of the most popular television series during the 1950s.
