When she suffered an occurrence in spring 2002, there was speculation that the actress was using her sick leave as an attempt to negotiate a pay increase, a charge that was denied by her spokeswoman.

"I've been playing middle-aged since I was 26." --Jane Kaczmarek to Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, March 27, 2000

Kaczmarek on Lois, her character on "Malcolm in the Middle" to Daily News (April 10, 2000): "The key to Lois is that she just doesn't have a lot of options. She has to fall back on practicality and common sense. She's always in a hurry and there's never enough money or help. She goes with her gut to keep things running. part of what makes their kids so crafty and clever is that she's such a commandant, they've got to be really ingenious to get away with their antics."

"When you're young, you have no perspective. Whenever you got a job, you felt like you were owed the job. Now I realize how lucky I am." --Kaczmarek on her acting career, quoted in Daily News, April 10, 2000.
