Jurmann studied medicine and gave it up for a music career. In 1933 he moved to Paris to write songs and in 1934 met Louis B. Mayer who offered him a seven year contract with MGM. Jurmann moved to the U.S. in 1935 and wrote the lyrics for one of his most memorable songs, "San Francisco," which Jeanette MacDonald sang in the film of the same name. In later years Jurmann conducted community orchestras in Los Angeles and Houston.
