More of Gilbert
- Debbie
- 2010-07-17
I became familier with John Gilbert from watching his silent movies on TCM. I have seen Queen Christina but would love to see more of his talking movies. I think he is the greatest and very much overlooked. He could have been as great as Gable and Bogart. He is remembered as the man Garbo left standing at the alter. But, he is so much more than that. His movies need to be shown more often so that everyone can see what a great actor he was.

An Actor Who Needs More Recognition

Still to this day, people do not appreciate John Gilbert and his talents. Besides being ridiculously handsome, he was a very gifted actor. I hope TCM will show more of his films so that people can see him as something more than Garbo's boyfriend or the man with the "high pitched" voice.

He's the greatest silent actor. I can only hope TCM will broadcast more and more of his films in the upcoming years, I never miss them!

One of the greats from the silent film era that was done wrong in his first talkie by a studio head that was jealous of his good looks. Handsome.

John Gilbert got a bad rap

I feel that John Gilbert got a bad rap. There was nothing wrong with his voice, and while I don't think he was the greatest actor in this world, he was certainly far from a bad actor. He was a good actor, and he was very handsome and personable. I enjoyed his performances in every movie that I have seen him: QUEEN CHRISTINA and DOWNSTAIRS.

The Great Romantic Idol

Superstar in silent films whose career in talkies was hurt by L.B. Mayer and alcohol. Famous for his films with Greta Garbo.
