Former art critic who in 1976 founded the Artificial Eye company, a leading British distributor of foreign films which has also helped produce works by artists such as Peter Greenaway and Jean-Marie Straub/Daniele Huillet. Engel made his directing debut with the political thriller "Melancholia" (1989).
