He orders them to get rid of Roy and Helen. After narrowly missing being killed while on their way to an Indian pow-wow, Roy and Gabby go to the Craig ranch where they discover an old clock and the crest hidden it it. They are taken captive by Courtney's henchmen and watch Courtney press a catch on the crest and take out a piece of paper. A fight ensues and The Sons of the Pioneers (Bob Nolan, Tim Spencer, Hugh Farr, Karl Farr and "Shug" Fisher) and Roy's Indian friends come to Roy's and Gabby's aid.

After five men previously acquitted of various criminal charges are murdered by a mysterious avenger known as Dr. Rx, police Inspector Hurd (Edmund MacDonald) and Sergeant Sweeney (Shemp Howard) ask private investigator Jerry Church (Patric Knowles) to help them on the case. He takes the case after talking to Dudley Crispin (Samuel S. Hinds), a brilliant attorney who had defended three of the murdered men. Crispin gains an acquittal for his latest client, Zarini (Matty Fain), but the latter falls dead in the courtroom. Jerry marries Kit Logan (Anne Gwynne), who becomes frightened and persuades Jerry to quit the case. He stays however after Ernie Paul (John Gallaudet), suspected of the Zarini murder, threatens to "get" him if he does not stay on and clear Paul. Dr. Rx captures Jerry and attempts to frighten him into insanity by strapping him on an operating table, and pretending to exchange the detective's brain for a gorilla (Ray Corrigan in his gorilla suit).

Private detective Michael Shayne (Lloyd Nolan) is serving on the jury trying Lillian Hubbard (Janis Carter) for the murder of Harley Forsythe. A witness with information that could clear Lillian is killed by a knife hurled from inside the courtroom. Shyane hides the knife in the ensuing confusion. He slips out of the jury room that night and, with the aid of reporter Judy Taylor (Marjorie Weaver), traces the knife to a professional blade-slinger, Count Edmond Telmachio (Alexander Lockwood). Shayne finds the Count murdered in a warehouse and a brooch discovered on his body now points the finger of suspicion at nightclub singer Rita Darling (Joan Valerie) and the owner of the club where she works, George Dolphin (Don Costello). Rita was the fiancee of Forsythe and Dolphin is in love with her. The trial begins the next day, with Shayne back in the jury box, after giving the information he picked up to defense counsel John Logan (Richard Derr). The trial takes a surprise twist when Shayne is permitted to cross examine everyone, including the defense lawyer, who has been in love with Miss Hubbard for years.

Reissued by Realart Pictures in 1953 as "Texas Road Agent", with a title change because RKO had just made a 1952 film using this title, and this was the first year that Universal's "Road Agent" was known as "Texas Road Agent" and that was not a 1941 alternate title as shown by some revisionist-history sources. The actual 1941 filming title was "The Sonora Kid." Duke Masters (Dick Foran) and his two pals, Pancho (Leo Carrillo) and Andy (Andy Devine), are undercover agents for an express company sent to round up a gang of bandits who have been holding up stages carrying gold to the cattlemen of the district. They begin by hijacking a gold shipment from the three bandits who took it from the stage. They take it to town and drop it at the bank. The money was the annual payment to the cattlemen, who are excitedly surrounding bank president Sam Leavitt (Samuel S. Hinds). Steve (John Gallaudet) and the two gunmen who helped him rob the stage are in the crowd. They report this unexpected turn of events to their boss, Big John Morgan (Morris Ankrum.) Morgan tries unsuccessfully to pin the original robbery on Duke and his pals. He later confers with Leavitt who is an unwilling tool in the holdups. Morgan tries to decoy Duke, Pancho and Andy out of town while his gang holds up the bank, but Duke, with the help of Leavitt's daughter, Patricia (Anne Gwynne), beats them to it and cleans out the bank himself, taking the money to Leavitt's home to cache. But Morgan, Steve and the gang are in pursuit.

Card sharps Chipper Morgan (Preston Foster) and Darby Randall (Arthur Treacher) pick the wrong victim, Detective Willis (Alan Dinehart), on a transatlantic crossing, and are arrested upon docking in New York and returned up the river to Rockwell Prison, their old alma mater. They had played brilliant football for "dear old Pen" during their prior semesters, and prison coach Slim Nelson (Slim Summerville) is happy to see them back for graduate work, especially with the annual grudge game with Larson State Pen coming up. Willis, who has been named the new warden for Rockwell, gives them soft jobs and then places a large bet on the Larson eleven. Both Chipper and Darby feel badly about the raw deal handed fellow "student" Tommy Grant (Tony Martin) and his sweetheart, Helen (Phyllis Brooks), who were innocently caught up in a phoney pension racket ran by swindlers Jeffrey Mitchell (Sidney Toler) and Ray Douglas (Robert Allen), and were both jailed. When Phyllis is released from Stillwell Prison for Women, she tells Tommy about the two men and their racket, and he decides to escape, even though he has only a month more to serve, and put an end to their scheme. He plans his break for the night of the prison's "varsity show" and tells Chipper and Darby, who promise to help him. But the pair tie up Tommy and make the break themselves, dressed as women. They go to Springfield, save the victim's money, get a confession from Mitchell and Douglas clearing Tommy and Helen, turn them over to the sheriff...and race back to Rockwell to find their team behind 14-9 late in the game. Can they lead old Rockwell to a comeback victory?
