Johnnie Scat Davis was born in 1910 in Brazil, Indiana. His father, Gus Davis, was the bandmaster of the Brazil town band. Johnnie played in the house band at the Keith Orpheum Theater in Terre Haute, Indiana until he graduated from high school. He then joined the Fred Waring Pennsylvanians as a trumpet and coronet player. The Waring band toured, and had a Sunday radio show from New York in which Johnnie was a featured personality. Waring and his band went to Hollywood and Johnnie introduced the Johnny Mercer song "Hooray for Hollywood" in the movie "Hollywood Hotel" in 1938. Johnnie remained in Hollywood until WWII when he formed his own band and toured. At the end of the war Johnnie went to Detroit and had Detroit's first morning TV variety show - "Coffee and Cake with Johnnie 'Scat' Davis". Johnny later toured, played as the house band in several Los Vegas and New Orleans venues until his retirement to Dallas, Texas. Johnnie was one of several bands that played at Ronald Reagan's first Inauguration. Johnnie died on Thanksgiving Day, 1984 and is buried in Arlington, Texas. His music library is housed at the University of Texas, Arlington, Texas Campus.
