Van Heflin A Life in Film
I am pleased to say that my book about this marvellous actor is now available. Van Heflin A Life in Film is published by McFarland, a leading publisher in this area for many years. I cover his life and focus on his film, theater, radio and television career. I hope it is a fitting tribute to an underrated player.
Van Heflin's stunning performances

If there is a greater actor than Van Heflin, I've not see him. He stole the show in "Johnny Eager" and was a totally different guy in "Three-ten to Yuma" and just as fabulous. I am late to the old movies of Heflin, but he is just the best thing I have ever seen in the movies.
Yet Another Van Fan
I absolutely adore Van Heflin. One of the first films I ever saw with him was Presenting Lily Mars. I probably would have liked it, but for some reason the speaker system on my television set was malfunctioning. Later, I decided to watch The Strange Love of Martha Ivers. After that, I fell deeply in love with him. He is one of my favorite actors of all time.
The Strange Love of Martha Ivers
- Kimberly Grider
Real, down-to-earth, believable, comedy or drama, usually character actor in supporting role, but leading man in my book! One of my all time favorite actors. Been watching "Old Movies" since I was 5. Think I first saw Van Heflin in "The Strange Love of Martha Ivers". Loved the way he treated Lizbeth Scott's character; very gentle and caring. The little personal touches that he brought to his characters; like smoking his pipe, and the coin "trick" he did in a couple of his movies... that was a bit that he added himself. His deep, calming, voice mesmerized me. I loved listening to him speak! And thought he was very handsome, though I have heard it said that he was not considered good-looking enough for leading roles. Wanted to write to him when I was in high school (early 80s), was very distraught when I found out that he was no longer living. May sound silly, but still remember that day. Thanks to TCM for providing a way for us people out here, "in the dark", to still get to see the faces and hear the voices of the those we love; but never knew or met (or got to write to). Maybe somehow they know how much they still mean to us. Thanks.
Another "Big Fan of Van"
Van Heflin was not a typical leading man in the category of Errol Flynn or Cary Grant. And after reading some of his bios, he agreed with that evaluation--since his looks wouldn't make him a star, his acting had to. I enjoy his movies and his acting, but I also like his rugged look and his sincerity. He was modest--almost self-depreciating, and that added to his charm and appeal on the screen.
One Of The Best
Van Heflin was one of the best actors that I love to watch. He made his roles so real, that you really get involved in the movies, and enjoy watching them over & over. He was truly a great actor, but was never to receive the star power he deserved. I am a great fan of his who truly appreciates the enjoyment from his acting/movies...& he is one of the best actors of all time.
big Fan of Van
Great actor...I'm always looking for his movies coming up.....all of them

In seeing Van Heflin in many films, I truly feel that he was underrated overall. The breath of his performances speaks well of him as an actor. Most actors today do not possess his acting talent!
