Biography CLOSE THE FULL BIOGRAPHY

A long-time critic for TIME magazine, Richard Corliss was instrumental in the 1970s in the development of the new film culture in the United States primarily as editor of FILM COMMENT, one of the longest-surviving serious US film journals. His book "Talking Pictures: Screenwriters in the American Cinema 1927-1973" (1974), took a contrarian view of the movie-making process, emphasizing, quite convincingly, the primacy of the writer at a time when most film scholars were under the thrall of the auteur theory.
