Matthew Chamberlain has been featured on New Zealand television since the mid-1990s, frequently in the sci-fi and fantasy genres. He made his first appearance in 1995 as a Confederate soldier in "Mysterious Island," a series based on the 1874 novel "L'¿le Mystérieuse" by Jules Verne. In the same year, Chamberlain took a role on the hit series "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys"; he appeared in three of the show's six seasons between 1995 and 1998. He also acted in two episodes of "Xena: Warrior Princess" and in one episode of "The Adventures of Swiss Family Robinson." In 2006 Chamberlain was featured in Jonathan King's sci-fi horror cult hit "Black Sheep," playing the role of Oliver Oldfield. He had a small part in James Cameron's 2009 epic sci-fi fantasy "Avatar," and in the following year he appeared as Ovidius in three episodes of "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," a gruesome and hyper-sexualized historical action series on the Starz network. In 2010 he landed a recurring role on Television New Zealand's long-running soap "Shortland Street," which follows the lives of the staff at the eponymous hospital in a fictional suburb of Auckland.
