NOTES

With his second Oscar nomination for "The Cider House Rules", Hallstrom became the first director to receive nominations as Best Director for both a foreign-language picture (1987's "My Life as a Dog") and an English-language one.

"Television was my film school." --Hallstrom on his training experiences while working in Swedish TV (from the press material for "Once Around")

"Lasse has huge respect for actors. He's extremely collaborative, and he's interested in characters that are multidimensional, that you can act with and take out to an edge and yet are wholly believable. He gets uniformly spectacular performances." --producer Leslie Holleran quoted in The New York Times, December 3, 2000.
