NOTES
Guare was a founding member of the Eugene O'Neill Playwrights Conference in Waterford, CT
He received the 1981 Award of Merit from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters
"My parents were very bright, very unhappy people . . . They lived intensely but separately in their own little worlds. Eventually so did I. I was left alone a lot, so I read a great deal -- everything from 'Madame Bovary' to 'Beau Geste' and a lot of mystery novels thrown in."--Guare to Patricia Bosworth in NEW YORK TIMES, March 7, 1971
