I think Sidney Greenstreet has always been underrated. He was a wonderful villian and actor. You believed him whether he was protraying a villian or a villian with a heart of Gold. He and Peter Lorrie were excellent together as they played so well off each other. They were the perfect team, villianous and yet humorous. He had the most penetrating eyes!
UNSUNG BRITISH ACTORS
THREE GREAT ACTORS,REGARDLESS OF PLAYING BIT CAMEO PARTS OR MAIN FEATURE CHARACTER, ALWAYS STOLE THE SCENES THEY WERE INVOLVED IN, LIONEL ATWILL,CHARLES LAUGHTON (WHO DID GET SOME DUES),AND IN MY OPINION THE GREATEST ACTOR TO GRACE THE SCREEN THE UNSTOPPABLE SYDNEY GREENSTREET.
One of the Best
I have seen all but two of Mr. Greenstreet's films and it is without reservation I say he is one of the best actors to ever grace the silver screen. No doubt his stage experience played a big part in his film presence. It is unfortunate his career in film was so short. When I mention his name to friends they will invariably say, "Oh, yeah! He was in the Maltese Falcon. Or, wasn't he in Casablanca?" Yet, his performances in Flamingo Road, The Woman in White, The Hucksters, The Verdict, and The Conspirators were equally notable. It is my hope that TCM will have a Sydney Greenstreet month and show all of his wonderful films so others might know this great talent.
