A cinematographer for Universal Studios for ten years, Gertsman often shot interesting and fascinating films and over the course of his career, he worked on war, sci fi, horror, comedy and even Ma and Pa Kettle films. He's also known for shooting Universal contract players publicity photos. Two of his most famous films are Sherlock Holmes' "Terror by Night" and "Dressed to Kill." Gertsman later shot films in Technicolor Westerns and war films and a handful of 3-D films as well, although his best work was shooting in black and white.
