Unforgettable character actor.
- John W Shultz
I only wish I had the language skills to give this man proper credit, but anyone who ever watched his performance in "My Man Godfrey","You Can't Take It With You", or "Destry Rides Again" will never forget him. He brings a certain quality to his characters that give them a unique appeal - the "character" he portrays always seems to be a variation of the same one (he'll never be credited with having a "wide range")HOWEVER, watching him on the screen never fails to entertain me, cause me to laugh, or bring me incredible joy. He was ahead of his time, and my only regret is that he didn't leave behind a larger legacy. I think what I like best is his "type" of humor - it was always clean, never at another's expense, if anything, it was at his own expense. I won't lie and say that I never laughed at the humor of Richard Pryor, Chris Tucker, or the likes of an Andrew Dice Clay - they also have their own place in the scheme of things - I'm just saying there seems to be something a little more solid, or real, when it is not toilet humor or at another's expense. I guess the true test is the test of time - 80 years later I'm still laughing at Mischa Auer's antics, in the mid 21st century, will they still be laughing at our current crop of comedians, or will it be dismissed as "comedy with no substance, just shock value"?
