  • My favorite actor

In 1954, I first saw John Garfield on the screen in Body and Soul 7 years after it was made, I was 11 years old and I became that night a John Garfield fan for life, and in my 71st year I have not seen any actor equal the emotions he projected on the silver screen, he was one of a kind. It was terrible what HUAC did to him and many of his fellow artists.

  • John Garfield-An Iconic Actor

I have seen nearly all of John Garfield's films, and to me he is one of the most underrated acting talents Hollywood has ever produced. Playing a variety of roles in different genres (mainly gritty dramas) over a film career that lasted only 13 years, Garfield brought a new vitality and toughness to film, and set the stage for other actors that would follow, i.e. Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift, James Dean and Paul Newman. Garfield got his start on the New York stage, appearing in several plays (including Clifford Odets' "Golden Boy"). After he came to Hollywood he signed a contract with Warner Bros., and in his film debut "Four Daughters" (1938) he was an instant sensation with both critics and audiences. In the early 50's Garfield got caught up in the HUAC witch hunts because of his association with actors, directors and writers with leftist leanings. This effectively ended his career, and he died of a heart attack at age 39 in 1952. Asking me to pick my favorite John Garfield film is like asking me to choose my favorite ice cream flavor (there's so many of them), so I'll list my 5 Garfield favorites: "The Postman Always Rings Twice", "Humoresque", "The Sea Wolf", "The Breaking Point" and "Force of Evil", in that order. If you want to really get to know this awesome actor, check out the TCM produced documentary "The John Garfield Story", narrated by his daughter Julie. It's a special feature on the DVD of "The Postman Always Rings Twice", which I have along with "Force of Evil". March 4, 2013 marks Garfield's 100th birthday, so maybe TCM can have a SOTM tribute or at least an entire day of his films. John Garfield, an true American film icon who left us way too soon.

  • HE MADE YOU FEEL FOR HIM!

JOHN GARFIELD WAS A VERY SKILLED ACTOR WITH A SPECIAL TALENT: HE MADE YOU FEEL FOR HIM! HE PLAYED MANY ROLES IN WHICH HE WAS THE UNDERDOG, AND YOU WANTED HIM TO OVERCOME ALL OBSTACLES, AND YOU NEVER GOT TIRED OF WATCHING HIM PLAY UNDERDOG ROLES, BECAUSE HE PLAYED THEM SO WELL! EVEN IN HIS LAST MOVIE, "HE RAN ALL THE WAY", IN WHICH HE PLAYED A KILLER WHO TERRORIZED AN INNOCENT FAMILY, I FOUND MYSELF ROOTING FOR HIM TO MAKE IT OUT ALIVE. I DO THINK IT TOOK A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF ACTING SKILL TO SO PLAY ON ONE'S EMOTIONS THAT YOU ROOTED FOR HIM TO OVERCOME EVEN THE TOUGHEST OBSTACLES! HIS EARLY DEATH WAS A GREAT TRAGEDY!

Mr. Garfield, Did you know? Did you know while you were here on this earth, that there would be generation after generation of movie fans who would discover you through the films you left us? Did you know there would be people of today, the year 2012, who are still be discussing your amazing acting talents? Did you know that today you would have numerous fans that are true, faithful and so thankful that you did what you were supposed to do while you walked on this earth? You became an actor and in doing so you shared your beautiful God given talents with the world. Did you know that when you refused to name, names and were persecuted during that horrible time, that you would win the respect and admiration for the courage you showed of millions of fair minded people? Did you know that many today can not believe that such a real man really existed? Did you know that because of your unbelievable talent countless of us can escape from the hard reality of this world, if only for a few hours, because of you and your films? Did you know that when you left this world at the young age of 39, people more than 60 years after that sad day, still weep bitter tears of the performances you might have amazed us with had you stayed longer? Mr. Garfield, do you know now, that you are still loved and remembered, and you will never be forgotten? It will not happen and the real "star" recognition that you so justly deserve will come. God bless you Mr. Garfield, may you rest in true peace and happiness. I am genuinely grateful to you and for the beautiful acting art that was John Garfield. Lori

I have four sons who have all chosen film making and acting as their passion. I felt it imperitive that they know John Garfield as an actor and his history to make their education in this area complete. This particular movie of John Garfield's I remember seeing as a child and has stayed with me these many years. A must see...I have made sure my sons know this film and this actor!

  • Taking exception with Garfield's biography

    • Jarrod McDonald
    • 2010-05-23

There were a few points in his biography here on TCM's database that I disagree with...first, they compare Garfield to Robinson and Muni. I don't think Robinson was supposed to be sexy, or that Garfield being arguably more sexy makes him more 'virile' and potent as a leading man than Robinson. That's silly...they are different men with different styles, even if the roles they played (anti-heroes) were a bit similar. And I think many women and men would say that Muni was hot in his own way. Again, why must we say that Garfield was sexier and therefore, more manly. Now, don't get me wrong...I like Garfield's performances very much, even in a few of the clunkers he made (and there were definitely some clunkers). But calling him the sexiest is a bit narrow in scope, and it only invites comparison to his successors like Brando and James Dean or Montgomery Clift. The other thing I take exception with is that they say his friends believe his fatal heart attack was due to the blacklist. Where is the scientific proof of that? Can it be substantiated with a coroner's report? Probably not. His heart attack was likely caused by heart disease which was likely caused by drinking and smoking and his diet. Maybe the blacklist added more stress and made him drink and smoke more (I don't know), but the blacklist itself did not kill him. Plenty of other artists experienced the blacklist and survived it. Again, this is not a criticism of John Garfield...but I do take exception to some of these outlandish notes in his TCM biography.

John Garfield was an amazing screen presence. As a movie fan, I feel an obligation to make sure his work is known and appreciated by all generations.

While Bogart is my favorate actor, Garfield is a close second. I have some of his great movies, but I find it difficult to expand my collection. I thought he was, and is, one of the best ever!

After watching John Garfiled in all his movies, ( have them all on either tapte or DVD) I now realize he is the best movie star ever. Just wasnt gien a chance by the studios or whoever made the decisions not to use him in the right manner. He was such an intense actor. He could have done comedy, but it wasnt in the cards for him. Fantastic talent, died way before his time. Had he lived, the entire world would know him like many of his contemporaries. Just incredible acting ability.

  • An actor "before his time"

John Garfield was probably the first true "antihero" star, with the possible exception of Bogart. But he was certainly an example to follow by later, similar type actors such as Brando,Newman and Dustin Hoffman.Garfield was just a marvelous and extremely convincing natural actor.

Before Pacino,DeNiro,Brando,Dean, and even Clift, there was John Garfield. One of the greatest and most powerful performers to grace the screen. He poured everything into every role, always giving an outstanding performance.

Before Brando, Dean, and Clift there was John Garfield. He brought toughness and a raw style to the screen, but with an air of sensitivity. He was a "method" actor before "method" actors came along.
