  • Clark Gable is the best!

    • Erica
    • 2012-07-12

I am 32 years old and just watched 'Gone with the Wind' for the very first time and I am in love! I became an instant Clark Gable fan! From the moment he first appeared in the movie, I was captivated! I am on a mission to see his other films!

Only Gable had that smile he could walk in a room and change the way you felt. I thought he was a great actor and from every thing I have read regarding his service time he was a great man. I have always read he was kind and thoughtful and loved the out doors. I have always been stunned by the acadamy for not recognizing one of the best perforances ever put on film{Rhett Butler}. He"ll always be my favorite because there is no one else quit like him.

  • What a fine Actor

    • 2010-09-24

To me his finest performances was before WWII. I feel one of his finest performances was his part as an AAF general in "Command Decision". He was suffering heavy losses trying to destroy German Jet Fighter factories. Since he was a B-17 bomber pilot during the war it was almost second nature. He should have won an Oscar.

    This was Gables' finest performance.

This was my favorite Gable film and Myrna Loy brought out the very best in Gable. Vivien Leigh didn't bring the best out of Gable in "Gone With The Wind".

The only way to improve his rating is to vote in the the user ratings column. He was magnificent in "A Free Soul" with Norma Shearer.

  • He is still the 'King' to me

"Gone With the Wind" came to our town in the early 60's. I was 10 years old and knew I had met the man of my dreams! My mother grew up in Hollywood and met Gable twice when she was about 13, sometime in the 30's. Once, at the Santa Anita Race track with her mother, and once at a gas station. Each time she said he was so nice and polite, and had such a wonderful smile. She said you would never know he was 'King' of Hollywood, not a arrogant bone in his body.

  • Clark Gable Deserves Better!

    • Alexa Leigh
    • 2010-06-30

How dare these people rate Clark Gable a four???? This is just as bad a rating as Joan Crawford's three stars. I mean, how can he get four stars for sex appeal? Clark was THE KING. When it was revealed he didn't wear an undershirt, men stopped buying them. Sales went down significantly. Who doesn't love Clark Gable? Every woman, no matter what age, finds this man irresistably attractive. There is no doubt about it. Also, what's with the four stars on 'well regarded in private life'? Clark Gable was very well loved in Hollywood AND his private life. Sorry, but he deserves much better and a four star rating is just as disgraceful and unfair as his not winning an Oscar for Rhett Butler was. Please people, think clearly before you rate. Poor Clark must be rolling in his grave. Five stars for the king of Hollywood!

  • Simply the best!

    • 2010-04-03

While Clark will never be confused with Olivier, he was the best at what he did. He had a charisma that I still have not seen equalled. (At the last theater release of "Gone With The Wind," I had the experience of hearing hundreds of women sigh involuntarily at that first shot of him at the bottom of the stairs at Twelve Oaks!) And he was not a bad actor, he was just a different sort of actor. I have read that, at one point, he had expressed a wish to be able to do character roles, like the ones Frank Morgan did, when his leading man days were over. I wish he had been able to do that; I think he would have been wonderful at it. If you can, try to see as many of his very early films as you can...those done before his "he-man" persona was solidified. He can do everything...comedy, juvenile, heavy...and do it well. To me, he will always be the King of Hollywood.

  • MY 'DEAR GABLE' IS THE BEST ACTOR EVER!

    • AUTUMN
    • 2010-01-04

I have seen many actors, in many different plots, but no matter how many I see I always say 'I know Clark Gable would've done just as well, or better.' I have 2 say that when I 1st saw him(he didnt even say words)that I loved him. When you watch his movies, you can tell what he is feeling through his handsome face, and those lovable eyebrow movements. I truly look up to CLark Gable:). I think he is the best actor of his generation. Alot might say that the only role he was great in was Gone With The Wind, although that is true, I beg 2 differ. He was great in all his films.....he just knew how 2 pull an audience in. What I also love about him was his humbleness. He considered himself a guy who was really lucky 2 be where he was @.He also treated everyone he was around with respect, which made him liked even more in Hollywood. He stood up 4 what he believed in, and never bowed down 2 less. Im still young, but I know what love is when I see a Gable film. He made me believe that love is out there and if I'm lucky 2 find love, I want my guy to be just like CLARK GABLE. REST IN PEACE AND MAY GOD BE WITH YOU, ALWAYS. With Love, Your Biggest Fan P.S I love his smile, when he has it in a smirk kind of way....it's just mesmorizing(dazzed about it now)

  • Gable is one of the greats.

    • 2010-01-01

There is no way Gable can't be considered one of America's greatest actors. Others are clouding his personal life with his professional life. Just because I love his acting and movies, doesn't mean I condone his conduct in his personal life. Anyone who can gloss over his career after seeing Gone With the Wind or It Happened One Night has no concept of what truly defines a great actor.

  • Awesome facial expressions!

    • 2009-12-28

Clark Gable is one of the best actors I have ever seen. But you know, there are a lot of them. What gets me, besides the wonderful acting, is the facial expressions. Those eye brow movements, etc. It really pulls you into the character your watching when you see it. Dick York from "Bewitched" also had the same uncanny way about him. A true pleasure to watch no matter what age you are.

  • Classic Hollywood Actor

    • 2009-09-27

At the top of his game...which was for many years, he was the top actor in Hollywood. Period. His range was huge...from comedy, "It Happened One Night"...to drama, "Gone with the Wind"...both all time film classics...and among the finest and most popular films ever made.

  • I love Mr. Gable

I cannot think of a single movie of Mr. Gable's that I haven't thoroughly enjoyed. They don't make them like that anymore. Which is a shame.

first of all i don't agree with some of his critics out here. you missed the point about him. cable had great personality and charisma. a terrific solid actor who did drama and comedy equally. a macho type who like cagney was rough with both men and women on screen. gable was a natural actor and did not always play gable on screen. he was the biggest star of the 1930's who starred in a number of classics such as "it happened one night", "red dust", "mutiny on the bounty", "san francisco", "test pilot", "gone with the wind", "boom town", "run silent, run deep". he ranks as one of the great classic movie stars along with james cagney, john wayne, humphrey bogart, cary grant.

Once upon golden era time in Hollywood, loud, overbearing man like Gable were popular. There's no longer much of an audience for them now. Instead, Henry Fonda, Gregory Peck, Tony Curtis et al are much more appealing. Gable belongs with the "I'm hot stuff" arrogating gang of has beens. Who enjoys watching male privilege played out but men who enjoy male privilege & women who don't know any better? That they're over 40 years behind the times, doesn't mean the majority of us still are. Move along realizing sexism, classism, racism & arrogance aren't classic.

  • King of What?

    • Dani_Canon
    • 2009-04-24

Certainly not film.... Maybe there was an audience for Gable during the golden era. It's run out. The only part of Gable's acting career or life that I have any regard for at all is Carole Lombard. Like Crawford, Gable could only perform roles playing Gable. Gable doing Gable = dull.

  • Over-Rated Machismo

    • 2009-04-02

The only film related to Clark Gable that I've ever enjoyed in the least has been "Gable and Lombard," (starring James Brolin, as Gable). Don't have a clue why he was called the king of hollywood because his films don't demonstrate that. Certainly his multiply adulterous lifestyle questions his character. I've no interest in suppporting the work of men who repeatedly betray women.

Clark Gable was first introduced to me by my good friend Paola and since the first time I saw him in Gone With The Wind I've been hooked on him and TCM. I hope everyone sees Gone With The Wind and can appreciate Clarks' performance. Even as Gable ages he still has that wonderful sense of character and goofy ears. He is one actor I won't ever forget.

  • The Classic Leading Man

    • Riccardo
    • 2008-08-28

One of the very best male actors, who exuded the manly virtues of strength, integrity, courage, and realism. In my book he was less the everyman hero like Jimmy Stewart; though a good comedian ("It Happened one Night"), he was less the comedian like Cary Grant...and more in the Marlon Brando vein...without the brooding screen presence. As befitted the early part of the 20th century, Gable was more direct and clear in his motivations....Brando being more complex and internalized. There was no male actor better at doing what he did.

Clark Gable was the king and he always will be. No one will take his place as the most talented actor, or take the place in my heart. I absolutely adore him and like Scarlett in GWTW, I fell hard for him. He truly will be missed.

I love the King! He is a boyishly handsome man. He has beautiful, baby smooth skin. He has a great smile with great dimples to compliment it. He has such a great boyish sly sense of humor. He's truly the King.

    • 2007-06-27

GROWING UP , ME, LIKE MANY OTHERS, WATCHED "GONE WITH THE WIND" FAITHFULLY WITH OUR MOTHERS AND GRANDMOTHERS ANNUALLY. I WILL NEVER FORGET ONE THING MY WONDERFUL GRANDMOTHER, OPAL LAURIE, SAYING TO ME. CHERI, "CLARK GABLE WAS THE BEST THING TO COME ALONG WITH MILK." THAT REALLY STUCK WITH ME. SINCE THEN I HAVE VIDEO TAPED APPROXIMATELY 75 OF HIS MOVIES AND COLLECTED ANY "GONE WITH THE WIND" OBJECTS I CAN POSSIBLY GET AND AFFORD. SEEING HIM IN GWTW AND OTHERS, HE CAN TRULY DO IT ALL, MAKING US LAUGH AND CRY IS A TALENT ONLY SEEN TODAY SELDOM. I SURE WISH WE COULD SEE HIM ALOT MORE OM TCM, LIKE YOU SEE GRANT, BOGART. AND JOHN WAYNE. YOU DEFINATELY DON'T SEE GABLE LIKE YOU DO THOSE GREAT ACTORS. THATS VERY SAD, SO MANY OF OUR YOUNGER GENERATION WILL MISS OUT ON SOME VERY GREAT MOMENTS WITH CLARK GABLE.

  • Gone with the Wind, But Not Gone with Gable!

    • 2007-06-13

Probably the biggest male star the movies have ever known and certainly one of the most unashamedly masculine, Clark Gable made women swoon and men want to be his friend. His appeal was universal and he starred in some of the biggest, and most fondly remembered, films of the 1930's and 1940's. A standard by which male stars of today are still judged, he has never been equaled.

  • THE KING OF HOLLYWOOD

    • Joshua
    • 2007-04-11

Clark Gable was a star who defined cinema during the 1930s. He had everything. Good looks, acting ability, popularity, you name it. Who could ever forget his performance as Rhett Butler in Gone With The Wind (1939)or his Oscar-winning role as Peter Warne in Frank Capra's It Happened One Night (1934). May Mr. Gable live on forever through film and memory.

I am very interested in being able to view more of Clark Gables movies, particularly, some of the movies to where his character was: Blackie...I believed he reprised that role on a few occasions...I'd love to be able to view those pictures. Clark Gable is one of the finest actors I have ever seen on screen. He honed his craft so well, at times, one forgets he is acting and becomes completely engolfed in the character, very believable...Clark Gable is and was, "one-of-a-kind." Believe it or not, when I experience stress in my life, one of the things I do to relax is watch a Clark Gable movie, and, I begin to relax and sometimes, the stress subsides for quite some time...watching his movies is quite a stress reliever for me. Thank you for allowing me to express my opinion on the greatest actor in my lifetime!

CLARK GABLE WAS THE MOST CHARISMATIC ACTOR OF THE 20TH CENTURY.IT IS A SHAME THAT HIS MOVIES ARE NOT SHOWN MORE OFTEN.I ALSO WOULD LIKE TO ADD THAT WHY HAS'NT HIS LIFE STORY BEEN BROUGHT TO THE BIG SCREEN?I THINK IS A FASINATING STORY THAT SHOULD BE TOLD.

  • He was " THE KING "

Clark Gable was TERRIFIC !!! He had it all! Great charm and charisma . Men wanted to be like him , Women just wanted him PERIOD!!! Some said he couldn`t act. That he just played himself in every movie. I disagree, watch him in the "crying scene " in Gone With The Wind!!Watch him in any scene of " San Fransico " He knew how to be a "STAR" both on and off the Silver Screen! New Hollywood has no concept!! Brad and Anglho-hum?? SORRY NO WAY !!!!

  • I adore him!

In my opinion Clark Gable is one of the greatest screen personalities ever and I love his style. I really like his looks but to me he is not only a great star, but a very fine, underrated actor, with drama and comedy abilities. Most of all I love his performances in "Gone With the Wind" and "It happened one night".

I have had the biggest crush on Clark Gable FOREVER, and I just turned 20. I fell in love with him the same time I fell in love with Rhett Butler. Gone With the Wind is my favorite book and movie. I must admit that I'm a little obsessed because I own Gone With the Wind everything (purse, bag, calendar etc.) I even have my room decorated with black & white pictures of classic movie stars & his is one of the biggest. I think he is an amazing actor and I am grateful to TCM for showing his movies.

Ever since I first saw GWTW in 1959,I was a fan of Clark Gable and I was only eight at the time. It was his greatest role and he was robbed of the Oscar. I am really glad to have TCM so I can see many of his movies. I have the book "The Movies of Clark Gable" and refer to it when his movies are on TV. I love the way he moves his eyes and his facial expressions...especially his smile, even with his false teeth! My brother actually resembles him, too! Its too bad he didn't have more confidence as an actor; because I thought he was one of the best.

CLARK GABLE WAS ONE OF THE MOST HANDSOME AND TALENTED ACTORS WE HAVE KNOWN. I DO NOT FEEL THAT ANYONE COMES CLOSE TO HIS APPEAL AND ABILITY NOW DAYS. P.S. I AM NOT OLD. I HAVE LOVED GABLE SINCE HIGH SCHOOL IN THE 1970's .ESPECIALLY WHEN I FIRST SAW GONE WITH THE WIND AND LATER OTHER MOVIES ON TV. I AM VERY GRATEFUL TO HAVE TCM . THANKS FOR KEEPING ALL OF THE GREAT TALENTS ALIVE.

A great and wonderful actor.Hero from Gone with the wind. The Rhett we should always remember. One of the greatest actor of the silver screen. He had his own way on screen as well as in the real life. It's so sad that his life had been full of dramas.I think he was a real sweat personn who never asked fancy things like many oscars (He gave his only one to a kid). He was just a swell and great man who made and still make lots of people dream.I hope our frend Ted will give him a signature collection.

Clark Gable started with nothing, but soon he made his way through Hollywood. Why?Because he's a hell of an actor, he said he wasn't talented and he was normal.Well he's right but it makes his charm, he's natural both on screen and off screen and he swept us off our feet.Yes it's him the rough but tender aventurer (or reporter) ,wisecraking time to time and above all very execting to watch.

Handsome and Charismatic are 2 words that carried Gable throughout his Career. Even at age 61 when he made his last Film Gable seemed to have complete control of the Screen with his Acting and Charisma.

He was handsome and charismatic and I like his command on screen. I wish that he had been faithful to Carole Lombard then she wouldn't have had to rush back to keep an eye on him for making a movie with Lana Turner.
