Black Sheep (1996)
Set in Buckley, Washington, the story opens during the final days of the state gubernatorial race as candidate Al Donnelly makes a campaign stop in his hometown. Al's younger brother, Mike, a well-meaning underachiever, is hell-bent on doing his brother proud, but despite his best intentions, something always goes wrong. Donnelly's advisors decide that Mike needs a "handler" to keep an eye on him during the final days of the campaign. Enter Steve Dodds, a lowly aide on the campaign team, who is to keep Mike under wraps. Al's opponent, the incumbent Governor Evelyn Tracy, takes full advantage of Mike's gaffes to bolster her own campaign--even if it means setting Mike up on purpose. When Dodd's attempts to keep Mike under control fail, and Mike's escapades continue to make front page news, the pair is dispatched to a dilapidated cabin in the woods to sit out the final days before the election. While in the woods, the guys encounter any number of challenges--both natural and unnatural.

The story of intelligent, charming, but unlucky siblings, 14-year-old Violet, 12-year-old Klaus, and their infant sister, Sunny, who are suddenly orphaned when their house burns down. The executor of their parent's estate sends the children to live with a distant relative, Count Olaf, but they realize that he has dastardly designs on the Baudelaire family fortune. The Baudelaire children are soon removed from Count Olaf's care and go to live with their Uncle Monty, a renowned snake expert. Things end badly after the arrival of a suspicious lab assistant named Stephano--Count Olaf in disguise. The children are then shuffled off to their fearful Aunt Josephine's. Sadly disaster ensues, due to the appearance of a mysterious peg-legged sailor--again Count Olaf, who then hatches his most dastardly plot of all.

Forensic detective and best-selling crime author Alex Cross is cool and professional about his work, passionate and protective about his family. A widower with a teenage son and a daughter, the bonds of blood are all important to him. So when his niece Naomi turns up missing from her college campus in North Carolina, Cross knows he must apply his formidable investigative skills to search for her. But unlike his previous cases, this one is personal and there's no room for error. Arriving in Durham, where the antebellum ruins of the Old South meets the modern buildings of the New South's Research Triangle, Cross learns a special Task Force Officer is already operating and that Naomi isn't the only victim. Seven other girls are missing and two bodies have been found, with a note left at the second murder scene signed "Cassanova." Cross receives only gruging cooperation from the local detectives who are wary of big city specialists and view Cross' investigation as unwelcome infringement.
