Ennis attended the University of North Carolina and at that time joined Hal Kemp's band as a drummer, later to sing with the band. He then formed his own band and played for the Bob Hope Radio Show in Los Angeles. Ennis led an army band in WWII and had many hits during the 40's and 50's. From 1958 till his death, Ennis and his orchestra had been playing at the Statler Hilton in downtown Los Angeles. Ennis choked to death on a bone in Lawrys.
