"Marc, you're a genius!" --Halle Barry to Forster in her 2002 Best Actress Oscar acceptance speech for her performance in "Monster's Ball."
"I was interested in "Monster's Ball" because it dealt with so many different issues. Especially as a foreigner, when you come to this country you observe things that you're not actually aware of until you come and live here. It has less to do with the death of a child and more to do with racism; the differences between generations; what it means to be a man; breaking the cycle of violence; the whole death penalty issue. All strong issues that I confront myself and have my own opinions about, obviously. It was very important to me to explore them since I live here now and the people who grew up here have been much more ingrained."---Forster commenting on "Monster's Ball" to a German magazine
Forster let Halle Barry have final cut over her nude scenes in "Monster's Ball."
"As an artist, you have to be a bit selfish, because your work comes before everything else," he explained. "But as a human being it's important for me to be slightly understated; it's important that your ego keeps a balance with yourself."---Forster to Los Angeles TimesNovember 21, 2004.
