Headed the photographic department at RKO; also worked as a cinematographer
Was a founding member of the International Photographers Guild
Created visual effects for "King Kong"
Worked on the special effects for "Citizen Kane"
Designed special-effects photographic equipment for Eastman Kodak and the US armed forces during WWII; with Cecil Love and Acme Tool and Manufacturing Company created the Acme-Dunn optical printer which later became the motion picture industry standard in processing special effects
Was involved in the effects for "Mighty Joe Young"
Created the special effects for "The Thing"
Received only competitive Oscar nomination for Best Visual Effects for "Hawaii" (shared nomination)
