Biography CLOSE THE FULL BIOGRAPHY

After starting his career in both Welsh- and British-made cinema and television, classically trained actor Matthew Rhys found stardom on the small screen in the United States playing an openly gay lawyer on "Brothers & Sisters" (ABC, 2006-2011) and an undercover KGB spy on "The Americans" (FX, 2013- ). Prior to his success on both series, Rhys honed his skills on stage and screen in the United Kingdom before landing his first high-profile role as Demetrius in "Titus" (1999). Though he gained exposure for that project, Rhys wallowed a bit in unremarkable films shot in England before landing the role of Kevin Walker on "Brothers & Sisters." During his run on that program, he appeared in indie films like "Love and Other Disasters" (2006) and "Virgin Territory" (2008), and was featured in the acclaimed foreign drama "Patagonia" (2010). After "Brothers & Sisters" was canceled, Rhys moved on to "The Americans" to play Philip Jennings, a sleeper KGB agent trapped between political loyalty and family obligation. Thanks to his leading roles on those two series, Rhys rapidly became a known commodity whose star was continually on the rise.

"Being young Welsh actors no longer means we have to play miners." --Matthew Rhys quoted in the London Times, May 14, 2000

Regarding his career, Rhys told British In Style (April 2001); "There really isn't anything I wouldn't do -- or haven't done. I've stripped off already. Difficult subjects, taboo subjects -- they are all part of the ballgame."
