"Her Majesty, Love," 1931

Directed by William Dieterle, this 1931 musical is not as "unbearable" as Leonard Maltin says in his review. Granted it's not "The Blue Angel" but it has its moments. We were fascinated by the antics of the Wellingen family, whom the hero, Fred, played by Ben Lyon, must overcome to win "sweet" Lia (Marilyn Miller). The ball-bearing industry supports this illustrious family, and Fred must reject Lia to become its general director. Ah, the course of true love never did run smooth. Dieterle weaves few new strands in this old romantic fabric, and plays a witty game with Lia, the old Baron, and younger Fred. The ending is a nice twist on marriage and divorce(s) which I shan't reveal here, but which the reader must view for himself.
