French Foreign Legion Captain Edwards (Brian Keith), is returning to his post with his desert patrol that is ambushed by an Arab tribe, with Edwards and his sergeant, Benet (Richard Denning), the only survivors. While Benet seeks volunteers, Edwards goes to say farewell to his wife, Celie (Barbara Hale), whom he finds in the arms of another officer, Lieutenant Forbes (Johnny Desmond.) Edwards and Forbes, naturally, begin their dangerous mission with hostility between them. Surrounded by the deadly Tuaregs, Edwards loses one man after another, but doggedly pushes on. He learns that even while the leader of the Tauregs is signing a peace treaty at the outpost, rivals within the tribe plan to ambush the leader, blame it on the French and start a new war.

Jack Benny (Himself) is preparing his New Year's Eve radio broadcast but takes time out to take his valet Rochester (Eddie Anderson) to meet his girlfriend Josephine (Theresa) arriving on a steamer. Fred Allen (Himself) and his sister Barbara (Verree Teasdale) are also enroute to the dock to meet Barbara's daughter Mary (Mary Martin), returning from a personal appearance tour in South America. Josephine is her maid. Their cars get involved in an accident and, in a bumping contest, Fred reduces Jack's old Maxwell to junk, and is taken to jail. Mary loses her dress in an accident and Jack offers to get her another one, but winds up being arrested for stealing. Barbara tells Mary that Fred is a nervous wreck because of Jack's continual slander of him on Jack's radio program. Jack hires the Merry Macs (Joe McMichael, Judd McMichael, Ted McMichael, Helen Carroll) away from Fred and Fred decides to go to Miami for a rest. Jack decides to open his radio program from Miami. They meet, have another brawl, and end up in jail again. The two are in a motorboat accident where both are knocked unconscious and Mary, in an effort to end the feud, tells Fred that Jack saved his life. They have dinner together at Fred's apartment and Rochester, whom Fred has hired away from Jack, appears and the feud is on again.

The zany plot follows nitwit Gracie Allen trying to help master sleuth Philo Vance solve a murder. Allen's uncle fixes her up with Bill at a company picnic. When the two go out to a nightclub that night, Gracie inadvertently links Bill to the murder of a thug after finding the dead body and Bill's cigarette case at the scene of the crime. While being questioned at the club, she meets Vance who's investigating the homicide. After Gracie's bungled attempts to solve the case, Vance decides it might be easier to have her working with him. Despite Gracie's "help," the two eventually find the real killer.

Carroll Naish), a half-mad potentate who informs them that all whites are his mortal enemies because an Englishwoman once spurned his love and he got his revenge by stealing her daughter, who is Tura. He had set her up as a goddess but she must now pay for befriending the hated white men by being sacrificed to the crocodiles in an underground temple. An earthquake rocks the island and destroys Kuasa and his band. Bob, Jimmy and Tura find a party of rescuers waiting on the beach, headed by aviation company president J. C. Martin (Jonathan Hale) and his daughter Eleanor (Virginia Vale as Dorothy Howe), Bob's fiancee. It soon becomes evident that Bob must choose between Tura and Elanor.
