In Dakota territory in the 1870s, White Bull, a young Sioux, proves his manhood by catching and training a wild colt he names Tonka. When a cruel cousin claims the horse as the privilege of rank, White Bull lets Tonka go. The horse ends up in the hands of a captain in the US cavalry about the time that Sitting Bull gathers the tribes to confront the growing US presence, epitomized by the bigoted General Custer. All paths, including those of White Bull and Tonka, lead to the confluence of the Little and Big Horn rivers.
The mysterious Mrs. Eleanor Carter (Virginia Field) moves to Springfield with her two teen-age children Jimmy (Gary Vinson) and Cathy (Judy Busch). Eleanor makes friends with the town's social leader, Mrs. Wellington (Ellen Corby), who supports her idea for a town youth center, and she is aided by Tom Griffith (Douglas Kennedy), the high school principal. At the town's annual picnic, to which Eleanor has bought a band (Les Brown and His Band of Reknown), the town busy-body, Eunice (Irene Ryan), reveals what she had learned from Eleanor's past.
Tommy Price (Mark Damon) is the leader of a gang of young thugs interested in thrills, hot rods and girls. His friends bet him he can't make it with 17-year-old Rosemary Clinton (Lili Gentle). Their date turns out badly and her parents (Dabbs Greer and Ann Doran) forbid her to see him again. They keep meeting, and the relationship changes him to the extent that he plans on going to college and changing his life, which delights his parents (Eddie Binns and Frances Mercer).
A retired surgeon starts giving away money to religious causes and his family tries to file suit, claiming that he's incompetent.
