It's school graduate, Jeff Flavin's, first day on the job as a cub reporter for the Enquirer. Boss, Archer, places Jeff with Stu Woodrow a lazying reporter. Stu detests cubs, treating Jeff badly. Jeff saves a drunken Stu's job by covering the convicted racketeer, Houseman's escape from prison. Jeff goes to Houseman's sister for a scoop he witnesses the murder of Houseman and an innocent young child. Stu grateful to Jeff thinks Jeff is to decent to be a reporter, sends Jeff on a fake story. Resulting in Jeff being demoted by an angry Archer. On his own, Jeff goes to the court house to see the trail of Marques, accused of Houseman's murder. Jeff, who speaks Spanish, hears the translater, Olmeda falsely state that Marques confesses to the killing. Jeff tells Archer that he has a story. The problem is that nobody believes him due to the fake story.

The Bride's Fair in a small Norwegian village is interrupted by the forced landing of Jimmy Hall (Don Ameche) and Duke Sargent (Cesar Romero), two Americans lost - really, really lost - while flying from New York to Paris. Jimmy is the manager of Duke, a publicity-seeking band leader. An old superstition points to Duke as the appointed husband-to-be (not likely) of Trudy Ericksen (Sonja Henie), daughter of villager Herr Ericksen (Jean Hersholt). Duke, however, has an understanding with Flo Kelly (Ethel Merman) back in the states, and leaves for Paris. Trudy follows him to New York, only to find he has left for Florida with Flo. Jimmy takes Trudy skating in Central Park, falls in love with her and is so impressed that he gets her a contract to skate professionally. Duke hears of her success and flies back and begins a series of romantic entanglements.

Three young girls working in an agency have build a singing trio. They want to 'lease' the dictaphone of their boss to make a record of their singin, but they are caught and fired. When they are not able to pay their rent any longer, they decide to try it on an amateur contest at a radio station. Due to lack of food Susan Moore becomes unconscious and the contest is won by a big band. But this big band offers them a job withe them at the radio station, they accept but after a while they again start to reach out for higher things and leave the big band.
