Joan Challenged the Status Quo
Joan may be many things, but timid is not one of them. Watching Joan in Dynasty, you can tell she emulated real life in Alexis Carrington. Being a working mother, wife, and entrepreneur, Joan showed strength and determination to get equal pay as her male counterpart. This effort did not bode well for her co-star Catherine Oxenberg, but Joan's tenacity brought to the forefront the disparity in salaries for females in other areas such as executives, athletes, and other professional careers. During the 80's, preteen girls, like myself, desired the strong female role, and Alexis gave us something to cheer for. While we could relate to Rosalind Russell in His Girl Friday/Auntie Mame, Bette Davis in All About Eve, and Katharine Hepburn in Stage Door/The Philadelphia Story/Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, Joan's portrayal of Alexis allowed an entire female generation to be comfortable with their sexuality, marital status, career aspirations, and motherhood. There are more beautiful (40 and 50 year old) women taking charge of their bodies and career today inpart due to Joan's success.
