Biography CLOSE THE FULL BIOGRAPHY

Actress Katie Holmes achieved fame as the fresh-faced star of a popular teen television drama and later became a tabloid staple as the wife of one of Hollywood's most polarizing figures. Already a teen model, Holmes scored an early success in director Ang Lee's somber family drama "The Ice Storm" (1997) before landing her breakout role as the adorably naïve Joey Potter on "Dawson's Creek" (The WB, 1998-2003). Attempts to segue into a feature film career during her "Creek" tenure yielded mixed results, with efforts like "Go" (1999), "Wonder Boys" (2000) and "Pieces of April" (2003) being among the high points. Nearly overshadowing her most prominent role in the superhero blockbuster "Batman Begins" (2005) was the news of her sudden marriage to Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise, a man 16 years her senior and a lightening rod for controversy, due in part to his association with the Church of Scientology. After more than two years away from acting, during which time she gave birth to daughter Suri Cruise under the constant scrutiny of the tabloid media, Holmes returned to work in 2008. A series of little-seen projects eventually gave way to such high-profile TV and film projects as "The Kennedys"...

As she matured both personally and professionally, Holmes sought to reestablish herself in Hollywood even she redefined her earlier ingénue image.

Notes

"I've been accepted to Columbia, and I deferred for this year. Eventually I'll go back. I want to major in English right now, but that'll probably change next month!" --Katie Holmes in USA TODAY, October 31, 1997

"I know I grew up very naive and sheltered, but I like that. I feel sad when I see kids who have experienced too much too young. I'm just learning myself what the real world is like. I'm glad I could wait this long before I had to deal with reality." --Holmes quoted in ROLLING STONE, September 17, 1998
