Eventually he winds up in New York, where he sells his songs to a music publisher, but refuses to sell his most treasured composition: "Dixie." The film is based on the life of Daniel Decatur Emmett, who wrote the classic song "Dixie."
A.C.Baker (Anne Shirley), advertising executive for an insurance company, approaches test pilot Terry Moore (Eddie Albert) with a proposition that in return for using his picture and endorsement he will get a paid-for-a-year $1000 policy. High-risk Terry agrees. George MacAlister (Roger Pryor) fires his secretary, Miss Tracy (Mary Treen), just as she is typing up the policy and she, for spite, changes the amount from a thousand dollars to one million dollars. A.C. delivers the policy, without noticing the difference, to Terry at a party at the Frolics Club, a cheap joint wedged between a burlesque house and a flop house hotel. Three characters, an elderly hat-check "girl" known as Mother Hodges (Maude Eburne); Avery Jamieson (Raymond Walburn), a broken-down actor; and bartender Harry Gargan (Edward Brophy) are named beneficiaries. When the company discovers the error, A.C. is sent to get back the policy and, pending that, don't let Terry make any test flights.
A writer for a radio program needs some fresh ideas to juice up his show. For inspiration, he rents a room with a typical American family and begins to secretly write about their true life antics. The show becomes a big hit, but he begins to feel guilty about his charade when he falls in love with the family's pretty older daughter.

Jack Benny (Himself) is preparing his New Year's Eve radio broadcast but takes time out to take his valet Rochester (Eddie Anderson) to meet his girlfriend Josephine (Theresa) arriving on a steamer. Fred Allen (Himself) and his sister Barbara (Verree Teasdale) are also enroute to the dock to meet Barbara's daughter Mary (Mary Martin), returning from a personal appearance tour in South America. Josephine is her maid. Their cars get involved in an accident and, in a bumping contest, Fred reduces Jack's old Maxwell to junk, and is taken to jail. Mary loses her dress in an accident and Jack offers to get her another one, but winds up being arrested for stealing. Barbara tells Mary that Fred is a nervous wreck because of Jack's continual slander of him on Jack's radio program. Jack hires the Merry Macs (Joe McMichael, Judd McMichael, Ted McMichael, Helen Carroll) away from Fred and Fred decides to go to Miami for a rest. Jack decides to open his radio program from Miami. They meet, have another brawl, and end up in jail again. The two are in a motorboat accident where both are knocked unconscious and Mary, in an effort to end the feud, tells Fred that Jack saved his life. They have dinner together at Fred's apartment and Rochester, whom Fred has hired away from Jack, appears and the feud is on again.

Fred Stevens (Johnny Downs), on his way to New York City with hopes of succeeding as a songwriter, meets and falls in love with Edna Baker, an employee in a dentist's office. In New York, Fred meets Paul Sears (William Demarest), a broken-down songwriter, his wife Lucille (Helen Flint) and her gold-digging sister, Eileen Fletcher (Terry Walker.) They are indifferent to him until they discover he has his life's savings with him. Eileen makes plans to marry Fred and ignores her song-publishing boy friend, Joe Hart (Lynne Overman.) Fred and Paul write a song together and take it to Hart, who sees a way to get Eileen off his hands by giving Fred a large advance. Fred, who is completely swayed by Eileen, parts with Edna. Hart continues the advances but when Fred and Paul go to him asking why the song hasn't been published, Hart tells them it isn't any good and he was using Fred to help rid him of Eileen. Fred now realizes he loves Edna. A popular radio singer sees Fred's song in Hart's office and sings it on the air, and it becomes a hit.
