Painter and sculptor turned animator who served in John Greirson's GPO unit, where he made documentaries and publicity films. In 1934 Lye developed a new technique for applying paint directly to film, which he introduced in his delightful animated short, "Color Box" (1935). He later experimented with techniques involving images scratched onto film stock and with what he called "kinetic sculpture."
